Meditation and Hypnosis as Mutually Complementary Relation
Eom Young-Moon

Abstract
With increasing interest in quality of life, wellbeing became a global issue and it became an opportunity of rerecognizing that body and mind is one thing. By means of the hope to have healthy life by controlling mind, meditation is attracting attention both from the East and the West, and the number of population practicing meditation is becoming gradually increased. From old times, meditation was means for self-discipline to purify mind and obtain realization, and hypnosis was mainly used as means for treatment. Because of such difference, meditation and hypnosis have taken different development courses, but they have many common elements such as breathing methods, relaxation reaction, brain waves, generation of images and appearance of deep consciousness, etc. Recently interest in hypnosis as well as meditation is becoming increased and education of hypnosis is also becoming popularized. If we use various images by grafting hypnosis on meditation just as the time when inducing hypnosis, right-brain becomes activated and on the contrary left-brain takes rest and as the result, alpha wave and theta wave are more generated and thereby, it is possible to experience deeper meditation. It is also possible to have group meditation such as inducement of hypnosis being led by a leader. As methods of hypnosis, concrete breathing and relaxation methods being practiced for meditation and methods of observing body and sense by subdividing them can be used. If we accept mutual merits of meditation and hypnosis, we would be able to promote relaxation reaction and strengthen attention, and furthermore to approach to deeper consciousness and thereby to obtain insight more easily as well as overcome stress. In other words, meditation and hypnosis have mutually complementary relation to increase mutual efficiency.
